IIT Delhi paves the way for a Green Energy Ecosystem

New Delhi :
Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT Delhi) has paved the way for a Green Energy Ecosystem. Many government and non-government organizations working in the area of energy have come forward to establish their Centres of Excellence (CoE) at IIT Delhi due to its scientists’ deep technology research outcome in the energy domain.

Help the nation become AatmanirbharBharat –

As per an IIT Delhi statement, the institute has filed over 45 patents in the last 5 years which can accelerate the realisation of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyaan (PM-KUSUM) Scheme & also help the nation become AatmanirbharBharat.

Which has run more than 50,000 kilometres –

IIT Delhi has also been doing pioneering work in the area of biogas research and as a success story the institute has developed the country’s first biogas-based car, which has run more than 50,000 kilometres on biogas in the last 6 years,” the statement added.

On the other hand, the need for energy security in –

Professor V Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi in the statement added: “To make the country a CO2 [carbon dioxide] minimal nation while ensuring energy security, we need to migrate from conventional energy sources to renewable and sustainable alternatives. Since these sources of energy are mostly intermittent in nature, the need of energy storage research also becomes very vital. On the other hand, the need for energy security in the mobility domain compels us to quickly move from gasoline based IC (Internal Combustion) engines to either alternative fuel-based engines or Electric Vehicles.”

The most notable one in the energy domain –

Professor SK Khare, Dean, Research and Development said: “At IIT Delhi, we have also undertaken research in the grand challenges mode to address the future sustainable energy needs. The most notable one in the energy domain is to convert the CO2 to value added products. Also, the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Infrastructure has ventured to achieve a net zero energy consumption building using IoT (Internet of Things) based data driven algorithms and low-cost retrofitted solutions.”

IIT Mandi researchers comes up with a technique for generating electricity by walking on roads

New Delhi :
Researchers of Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi (IIT Mandi) have come up with a technique of building roads with Piezoelectric Materials to generate electricity on simple human walking. Using these materials, the weight from vehicles can also power up the road lights & traffic signals.

What are Piezoelectric Materials? –

Piezoelectric materials are materials that have the ability to generate internal electrical charge from applied mechanical stress. The term piezo is Greek for “push.” Materials that exhibit the piezoelectric effect also demonstrate the inverse piezoelectric effect (also called the reverse or converse piezoelectric effect). The inverse piezoelectric effect is the internal generation of mechanical strain in response to an applied electrical field.

Proposed the idea of using these piezoelectric materials –

The researchers have been studying and finding piezoelectric materials that can convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. After the research, they have proposed the idea of using these piezoelectric materials in floor tiles to build the roads, which will generate electricity on human walking. Also, the weight from vehicles can power up the road lights and traffic signals.
