IIT Bombay starts work on designing an X-ray space telescope to study gravitational waves

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Bombay) has started to work on their 5th space thermed project. IIT-Bombay begun work in designing an X-ray space telescope which is named as ‘Daskha’ to study gravitational waves.

To ensure continuous coverage of the entire sky –
The project comprises two satellites to be deployed on opposite sides of the earth to ensure continuous coverage of the entire sky. Like India’s first space telescope, Astrosat Daksha will be deployed 650 metres above the earth’s surface.

Daksha will be IIT-B’s fifth space-themed project. The first was the Pratham student satellite launched on September 26,2016. The second is under development. Advitity is the second project.

What are Gravitational Waves? –
Gravitational waves are ‘ripples’ in space-time caused by some of the most violent and energetic processes in the Universe. These cosmic ripples would travel at the speed of light, carrying with them information about their origins, as well as clues to the nature of gravity itself.

IISC Bengaluru develops non invasive bandage to treat skin cancer

Researchers from Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru (IISC Bengaluru) have developed a non invasion bandage made with magnetic nanofibres to treat skin cancer. This will be done by administering heat to the tumor cells.

What is Skin Cancer?
Skin cancer develops primarily on areas of sun-exposed skin, including the scalp, face, lips, ears, neck, chest, arms and hands, and on the legs in women. But it can also form on areas that rarely see the light of day — your palms, beneath your fingernails or toenails, and your genital area.

Three major types of skin cancer –
Skin cancer affects people of all skin tones, including those with darker complexions. When melanoma occurs in people with dark skin tones, it’s more likely to occur in areas not normally exposed to the sun, such as the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. There are three major types of skin cancer — basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.

skin cancers do not cause any symptoms –
Most skin cancers are curable, especially when treated at an early stage. At first, skin cancers do not cause any symptoms. Therefore, any unusual skin growth that enlarges or lasts for more than a few weeks should be examined by a doctor. However IISC Bengaluru have developed such a bandage which will treat the skin by administering heat into the tumor cells as this bandage is made through magnetic nanofibres.

Magnetic ferrite nanoparticles are –
Magnetic nanofibers (MNFs) are integrated with a variety of properties, such as large surface area, high porosity, small size effect and apparent magnetism. Magnetic ferrite nanoparticles are precipitated in situ onto Nanofibrils from metal salt solutions.
