JAB decides to give Students who missed JEE Advanced a chance to re-appear in 2021

New Delhi :

Joint Admission Board (JAB) in an emergency meeting on Wednesday decided to give Students who skipped the IIT entrance exam – JEE Advanced an extra chance to appear for the test next year in 2021.

Allowed only two attempts –
It is to be noted that many students due to Corona Pandemic didn’t appear for their JEE Exam. Some of the students were having the last to appear. After that they couldn’t appear in further trials. Currently, a candidate is allowed only two attempts at the IIT entrance exam, however, those in their final year or second attempt who could not take the exam this year will be given a relaxation. The demand for extending the number of attempts has been raised by students and academicians for quite a while now.

Avoiding prejudice to other candidates –
According to an official statement, “To address the concerns of the affected candidates, while avoiding prejudice to other candidates, it has been decided to allow all the candidates, who had successfully registered to appear in JEE Advanced 2020 but were absent in the exam, to appear in JEE (Advanced) 2021, as a one-time measure.”

The number of students appearing for JEE Advanced 2020 was also a record low. Of the 2.5 lakh students who were eligible to appear only 1.5 lakh had appeared for the exam.

Relaxation of existing eligibility criteria –
To ensure equal opportunity to all, the JAB has also decided that these candidates will not have to qualify for JEE (Main) 2021 and will be allowed to directly appear in JEE (Advanced) 2021 on the basis of their successful registration to appear in JEE (Advanced) 2020. This relaxation of existing eligibility criteria will be in addition to the proportionate relaxation of the age bar. Further, it was decided that these candidates would be considered in addition to and not as part of the total number of candidates who would qualify from JEE (Main) 2021 for appearing in JEE (Advanced) 2021.

IIT Mandi develops environmentally safe and cost efficient catalysts

New Delhi :

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi researchers has developed a carbon based nanosheet that can be used as environmentally safe and cost efficient catalyst that enables industrial hydrogenation reactions. The environment-friendly nanosheet can replace precious heavy metals currently in use, bringing down the process’ cost.

What is Hydrogenation? –
Hydrogenation is a process of adding hydrogen to a compound which is commonly used in industries to produce aromatic alcohols for perfumes, pharmaceutical products, agrochemicals and other chemical substances. Instead of using hydrogen gas, which can be inconvenient and expensive, industries use hydrogen donor chemicals that release hydrogen for the reaction. However, a catalyst is needed for the completion of the reaction.

What is a Catalyst? –
A catalyst is a compound that increases the rate of a reaction without getting consumed in the process. For hydrogenation, industries currently use precious metals such as rhodium, iridium, platinum and ruthenium that are expensive and lead to environmental pollution. The recovery of these metal catalysts is also difficult.
