IIT Guwahati develops low cost technology to produce psychoactive drug and anti aging compounds from agricultural resources

Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) researchers have developed a low cost technology to produce psychoactive drug and anti aging compounds from agricultural resources. The technology will not use any organic solvents thus reducing the cost at an industrial scale.

It was developed by Professor Mihir Kumar Purkait, Head of Centre for the Environment, and Professor of Department of Chemical Engineering along with his M Tech student V L Dhadge.

Wide range of agricultural resources –
The membrane technology produces psychoactive drugs and anti-aging compounds from wide range of agricultural resources like camellia sinensis, citrus fruits, and peels especially orange peels, berries, ginkgo biloba, parsley, pulses, tea, sea buckthorn, and onions. The health-related benefits of psychoactive drugs (caffeine) and anti-aging compounds (flavonoids) are attributed to stimulating detoxification of enzyme activity and inhibition of cell invasion and angiogenesis, and have gained popularity as ingredients in pharmaceutical industry.

Government of India by producing these compounds –

In a statement, IIT Guwahati stated,”India is the largest consumer (20% of the global production) and second-largest producer of camellia sinensis. The developed technology will support the “Make in India” initiative of the Government of India by producing these compounds in the country. This will definitely reduce the import of said polyphenolic compounds. Implementation of the said technology will also create job opportunities in the agriculture sector of the country. ”

IIT Kanpur and ASI signs agreement with Italian Institutions to Restore and Protect Historical Monuments

Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) and Archeological Survey of India (ASI) has signed MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with two institutions from Italy to work for the restoration and protection of historical monuments of India. The activities will be coordinated by professor Mukesh Sharma from IITKanpur who said that the institute will employ scientific approaches to restore monuments.

Creating a network and sharing skills –

Prof. Sharma said that the MoU was signed among IIT-K, Ca’Foscari University of Venice, Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti E Paesaggio, Venice, on creating a network and sharing skills for restoration and protection of historical monuments. All institutes have agreed to develop collaborative scientific study activities and sharing skills to restore and protect monuments on a reciprocal and equal basis.

Undertaking joint field studies –
“All institutes shall seek to promote collaboration and activities in areas such as collaboration in scientific studies and skill sharing, the exchange of knowledge, experience, academic materials and publications, conducting workshops, undertaking joint field studies and technology development”, Prof. Sharma added.

Availability of resources and monuments –
He also stated that a specific plan will be worked out for each activity, depending upon the availability of resources and monuments requiring protection and restoration. Hence, this agreement will help to restore and protect our precious historical monuments. This is a great step towards preserving India’s History and Culture.

IIM Banglore’s PGPEM course ranks in the Top 100 in Global List

Indian Institute of Management, Banglore’s (IIM Banglore) Post Graduation Program in Enterprise Management (PGPEM) course has been ranked in the Top 100 in the Financial Times (FT) EMBA 2020 ranking. India will soon be becoming Vishwaguru again as the great works being done by such institutions.

MBA programme designed for working mid-level –
Participating for the first time in this ranking, the programme has taken the second position in India, the IIM-B said in a press release. The PGPEM at IIM-B is a weekend MBA programme designed for working mid-level and senior executives with a minimum of four years of work experience after graduation, the release said. The programme aims to prepare the participants to manage greater responsibilities as business leaders, it said.

Cored well in categories such as salary increase –

Among the parameters that the ranking is focused on, PGPEM has scored well in categories such as salary increase, career progression, aims achieved, women-on-board, and corporate social responsibility, it said. Professor Abhoy K Ojha, Dean (Programmes), IIM-B, was quoted as saying in the release that the PGPEM is designed to help working professionals stay ahead.

Over the years, every major global ranking has had IIM Banglore’s various programmes in the top ranks.
