HP Agricultural Marketing Board seeks help from IIT Mandi for better apple cartons

New Delhi :
The Himachal Pradesh Agricultural Marketing Board has asked Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi (IIT Mandi) to help prepare better packaging material for apples. Apple growers stated that both telescopic & universal cartons were not good enough to keep the fruit damage-free & sought the help of IIT Mandi for an innovative packaging.

Use of telescopic or universal cartons has been a debatable issue –

“We have asked the IIT whether it could design a better carton for packaging the fruit,” said HP Agricultural Marketing Board MD Naresh Thakur. The use of telescopic or universal cartons has been a debatable issue among orchardists for a while now. Orchardists, therefore, will be looking forward to a newly designed carton that resolves all issues related to it, including the quantity.

Private investors sounded quite enthused –

Besides, the board has decided to offer its vacant or underused properties to private players on the PPP mode. Among the properties up for grabs will be the board’s vacant land at many places and unused or underused market yards. “Private investors sounded quite enthused about the plan as most of them are looking forward to expanding their operations in the state,” said Naresh Thakur.

The collaboration between the board and private players –

He further added, “Apart from the existing players such as Reliance Fresh, Adani, Walmart, Big Basket, etc, new entrant Amazon Fresh has also shown interest in our proposal,” he added. The collaboration between the board and private players will lead to a makeover of the former. “The Marketing Board has so far functioned through the levy mode, where we charge fee for facilitating trade between arhtiyas and farmers. Now, if this proposal goes through, we will get into the service mode, too. ”

IIT Delhi has also been doing pioneering work in the area of biogas research and as a success story the institute has developed the country’s first biogas-based car, which has run more than 50,000 kilometres on biogas in the last 6 years,” the statement added.
